SUMMARY:Northwest Wisconsin Regional Food Network
DESCRIPTION:The local food movement is on fire!  Take back the power over your health, your community wealth and the values of a sustainable planet for future generations.  It all starts at home, at the table where food is served. Thursday and Friday, March 24th and 25th in Rice Lake, WI.  The summit will be held in Ritzinger Hall at the Technical College on the edge of town. Thursday starts at 12:30 with registration, followed by two workshops.  At 5:00, it's a mixer, with dinner and remarks by Ken Meter, rural economist extraordinaire. Friday, lots of workshops in the morning and the afternoon, with a midday keynote by Mark Winne entitled "Building Food Connections as a Strategy for Community Change" Kudos to Tracy Mofle and Arianne Peterson for putting this together.  Contact Tracy at:  tracey.mofle@uwc.edu or 715-790-9177.

SUMMARY:Bioneers Annual Meeting, Macalester College
DESCRIPTION:The Bioneer movement from California is a loosely based permaculture assembly that meets annually.  There are workshops, tables, symposium simulcasts and all kinds of interesting people, literature and networking opportunities.  This year, it's being held at Macalester College in St. Paul, likely a step up from the cavernous space at Williamson Hall on the U of M Campus. Resilient Northern Habitats will be there with a table and extensive information about what we are up to in rural Wisconsin.  We hope that you can make it, and if you do, stop by and say hello.

SUMMARY:50 Year Party -- Wee-Bike Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Veterans of Wagon Landing will be very pleased and surprised this year by changes and additions to the Fall spectacular, traditionally known as Wee-Bike Weekend. For many years, a group of hardy, hard-playing south Minneapolis liberals have gathered at the farm and gone biking during the peak of Fall color season.  Usually it's a sunny day, crisp, obvious hints of Autumn more a spur to heights of good humor than a source of seasonal trepidation about summer's decline. On Saturday in early evening a potluck ensues, we share some stories, sing, take saunas, stay up late, and end up, if all goes well, slobbering on each other, before crashing and pretty much trying to do the same thing all over on Sunday. This year, we have added some events.  Dear Wagon Landing friend Paul Quick, who recently had his bladder removed is designing a frisbee golf course on the new land tract up-river.  The course will be a major part of the weekend, as recreational event, property tour proxy, and fundraising benefit to help Paul regain some financial footing after a rough ride through major surgery.    Tee off is at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 1:00 on Sunday.  Winners each day will play for the championship on Sunday afternoon, and a grand prize.  Entry fee is $20.00.  Independent donations for Paul will be gathered all weekend. Also, on Saturday, we have added a lovely seasonal Happy Hour, with drinks flowing from the handsome bar and bartender, spiced with local ingredients and fine liquors.  Not to be missed really.  That comes down at 4:00 p.m. or so on Saturday.  By the way, during Happy Hour, accordionist extraordinaire Mark Stillman of Minneapolis will regale the masses with a variety of accordion music, old and new.  Will there be dancing?  Likely. Special Notes:  Zero waste event.  Please bring no garbage, or plastic.  The only food item needed is a dish to pass on Saturday night for the Potluck.  Otherwise, RnH is happy to be providing quality, local food and drink.  Special mention:  Sunday's breakfast will be staged at the Cree House just upriver from Wagon Landing.  Stroll on over and check out the new headquarters for Permaculture in Polk County and enjoy waffles, eggs, coffee, tea and toast.  The champagne may well flow -- especially if  you bring some and we decide to christen the new property. Oh, by the way, no cooking this year.  That's right, no cooking.  Sorry folks, just too much chaos.  We've hired a crew and bought a lot of food and it doesn't make sense to muck that all up with independent operations.  However, guests will be asked to chip in some time cleaning up after one of the meals.  Find the sign-up sheet and get on the list.  Those that do will be first to get invitations to future events. Sunday, as always, is the sit-down dinner with lamb and chicken, roasted potatoes, fall salads, and a special dessert.  People, you will not want to miss this.  Singing, wine, toasts --God, hope it's nice out.  If you get a little carried away, drink too much, end up in a game of charades, require a late-night sauna -- well, guess what?   You are welcome to stay the night.  And there are plenty of spots indoors this year.  Wee-Bike has gone upscale. So, lot's going on -- ample fun, great food and drink, some fundraising for a dear friend, introducing a new property to the community, and, oh  yeah, it's someone's 50th birthday -- but we won't make a big deal about that, will we? By the way:  Presence -- not presents.  Very permaculture.

SUMMARY:Wisconsin State Humanities Commission Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Gaylord Nelson Earth Day Project includes two parts. The first is the world premiere of a new play with music, written by Wisconsin novelist David Rhodes, called “Happy and the River” about Gaylord Nelson’s unique role in the creation of Earth Day. The play will be performed in St. Croix Falls , Washburn, and Madison , Wisconsin . Additional performances may be scheduled. The second part of the Gaylord Nelson Project is a series of community “Teach-Ins”, funded by the Wisconsin Humanities Council. These community discussions, moderated by a humanities expert, will explore the unique history of environmental conservation within six host communities in the St. Croix River watershed. They will explore how that legacy has imprinted the present character of the community, and what challenges lie ahead in the community’s future. It is hoped that new alliances and a fresh perspective may be gained by both taking a longer view of the specific environmental challenges the community has faced—past and present—and by bringing together a diverse cross-section of the community, fostering an opportunity for new partnerships and alliances to be formed.

SUMMARY:Grand Trail Opening-- Stower Seven Lakes State Trail
DESCRIPTION:Ten years in the making, Stower Seven Lakes Trail is a beautiful and fully non-motorized state trail that has recently been completed with monies from the Federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  Please join us in beautiful downtown Amery on Saturday, August 21st as local and state dignitaries inaugurate the trail, named after long-time mayor and state representative Harvey Stower. The trail runs 14.2 miles west out of Amery and terminates at Lotus Lake, near the village of Dresser.  Along the way, it traverses seven lakes, one of which, Dwight Lake, offers an excellent swimming beach.  The land is gently rolling back fields off of bucolic farmsteads, oak savannah and tamarack marsh.  A perfect way to get some exercise while watching the best of western Wisconsin roll by.

SUMMARY:RNH Presentation on Permaculture
DESCRIPTION:Resilient Northern Habitats will be presenting an Introduction to Permaculture at the first annual Polk County Energy Fair at the fairgrounds in St. Croix Falls.  The presentation starts at 10:00 a.m. and will last about an hour.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn about permaculture from Kari and Peter as they work to bring strategic permaculture design principles to northern temperate climates.
